What Is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile dysfunction (ED) is a common condition that many men experience at some point. It means being unable to get or keep an erection that is firm enough for sex. An occasional difficulty is perfectly normal, but when the problem keeps coming back it can knock your confidence and affect your relationship and general wellbeing.

At Carpathia Pharmacy we offer confidential, expert advice and suitable treatment to help you manage erectile dysfunction and look after your sexual health.

What Causes Erectile Dysfunction?

ED can have physical causes, psychological causes, or a mixture of the two. Poor blood flow is one of the most common: conditions such as high blood pressure, heart disease and diabetes can reduce the circulation to the penis. Hormone problems, such as low testosterone or a thyroid condition, can also play a part.

Psychological factors matter too. Stress, anxiety, depression and relationship difficulties can all affect sexual performance, and lifestyle habits such as drinking too much alcohol, smoking and not exercising raise the risk further.

Some prescribed medicines, including certain antidepressants and blood pressure tablets, can also cause ED as a side effect. Never stop a prescribed medicine without speaking to your prescriber first.

Treatments Available

There are several ways to manage ED, and the right one depends on you and your health.

Tablets

The most common treatment is a group of prescription-only tablets, known as PDE5 inhibitors. They work by improving blood flow to the penis, which makes it easier to get and keep an erection. They are only supplied after a consultation, so we can make sure they are suitable and safe for you.

Lifestyle changes

Small changes to everyday habits can make a real difference. Regular exercise improves circulation, reduces stress and benefits your overall health, while a balanced diet with plenty of fruit, vegetables and lean protein supports your heart and blood vessels.

Cutting down on alcohol and stopping smoking both help, because each reduces blood flow and can make ED worse. It also helps to look after your mental health: counselling or therapy for anxiety or relationship worries can help to rebuild your confidence.

Vacuum pumps and other devices

Vacuum erection devices help draw blood into the penis to produce and maintain an erection. They can suit men who would rather not take medication.

Can ED Be a Sign of Something Else?

Sometimes, yes. ED can be an early warning sign of heart disease, diabetes or a hormone imbalance. If the problem is ongoing, it is important to talk to a healthcare professional so that any underlying condition can be ruled out.

How do I book an appointment for a consultation?

You can book online using the Book Now button on this page, or call the pharmacy on 01534 887629 and our team will book you in.

Can I have a consultation online instead of visiting the pharmacy?

Consultations normally take place at the pharmacy, in a private space. If you would prefer a phone or video consultation, please contact us to ask whether this is possible for you.

Is the consultation confidential?

Yes. It takes place in a private space and your information is treated with full discretion.

Will I definitely be offered treatment?

Not necessarily. Treatment is only offered where it is clinically appropriate and safe for you. If it is not suitable, we will explain why and talk through other options, which may include speaking to your GP.

How do I receive my prescribed medication?

If treatment is appropriate, you can collect it from the pharmacy. If collecting in person is difficult, ask our team about delivery.

What happens if I need to make a payment for my treatment?

Payment details are shown when you book. If you have any questions about cost before you book, please call us and we will be happy to help.

What is a Pharmacist Prescriber, and how does it help me?

A pharmacist prescriber is a pharmacist with extra training who can assess your health, make a clinical decision and prescribe medicines where appropriate. Our in-house pharmacist prescriber can often do this in a single consultation, so you do not need a separate GP appointment first.

What are Patient Group Directions (PGDs), and how do they work?

A Patient Group Direction is a written instruction that allows suitably trained healthcare professionals to supply certain medicines to patients who meet set criteria, without an individual prescription. Your pharmacist will explain which route applies to you.

Do I need a GP referral to receive treatment at Carpathia Pharmacy?

No. You can book a consultation with us directly. If we think you would be better supported by your GP, we will tell you.

How quickly can I get my medication after a consultation?

If treatment is suitable, your pharmacist will explain at your consultation how and when you can collect it.
